A Low Stellar Obliquity for Wasp-47, a Compact Multiplanet System with a Hot Jupiter and an Ultra-short Period Planet

چکیده
We have detected the Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect during a transit of WASP-47b, the only known hot Jupiter with close planetary companions. By combining our spectroscopic observations with Kepler photometry, we show that the projected stellar obliquity is λ = 0± 24. We can firmly exclude a retrograde orbit for WASP47b, and rule out strongly misaligned prograde orbits. Low obliquities have also been found for most of the other compact multiplanet systems that have been investigated. The Kepler-56 system, with two close-in gas giants transiting their subgiant host star with an obliquity of at least 45, remains the only clear counterexample. Low Stellar Obliquities in Compact Multiplanet Systems
We measure the sky-projected stellar obliquities (λ) in the multiple-transiting planetary systems KOI-94 and Kepler-25, using the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. In both cases the host stars are well-aligned with the orbital planes of the planets. For KOI-94 we find λ = −11±11◦, confirming a recent result by Hirano and coworkers. Kepler-25 was a more challenging case because the transit depth is un...
متن کاملObliquities of hot Jupiter host stars: Evidence for tidal interactions and primordial misalignments
We provide evidence that the obliquities of stars with close-in giant planets were initially nearly random, and that the low obliquities that are often observed are a consequence of star-planet tidal interactions. The evidence is based on 14 new measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect (for the systems HAT-P-6, HAT-P-7, HATP-16, HAT-P-24, HAT-P-32, HAT-P-34, WASP-12, WASP-16, WASP-18, WAS...
متن کاملStellar spin-orbit misalignment in a multiplanet system.
Stars hosting hot Jupiters are often observed to have high obliquities, whereas stars with multiple coplanar planets have been seen to have low obliquities. This has been interpreted as evidence that hot-Jupiter formation is linked to dynamical disruption, as opposed to planet migration through a protoplanetary disk. We used asteroseismology to measure a large obliquity for Kepler-56, a red gia...
متن کاملA high stellar obliquity in the WASP-7 exoplanetary system
We measure a tilt of 86± 6◦ between the sky projections of the rotation axis of the WASP-7 star, and the orbital axis of its close-in giant planet. This measurement is based on observations of the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect with the Planet Finder Spectrograph on the Magellan II telescope. The result conforms with the previously noted pattern among hot-Jupiter hosts, namely, that the hosts ...
متن کاملSALT observations of the Chromospheric Activity of Transiting Planet Hosts: Mass Loss and Star Planet Interactions
We measured the chromospheric activity of the four hot Jupiter hosts WASP-43, WASP-51/HAT-P-30, WASP-72 & WASP-103 to search for anomalous values caused by the close-in companions. The Mount Wilson Ca ii H&K S -index was calculated for each star using observations taken with the Robert Stobie Spectrograph at the Southern African Large Telescope. The activity level of WASP-43 is anomalously high...
